What is a covenant church?

The Evangelical Covenant Church has its roots in historical Christianity as it emerged in the Protestant Reformation, in the biblical instruction of the Lutheran State Church of Sweden, and in the great spiritual awakenings of the 1800’s.  More information about the Evangelical Covenant Church denomination can be found at www.covchurch.org.  Decorah Covenant Church began in the mid-1990’s as a dream to broaden the existing Christian witness to the Decorah community.

The Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) is a rapidly growing multi-ethnic denomination in the United States and Canada, with ministries on five continents of the world.  The denomination was founded in 1885 by Swedish immigrants and has remained committed to the following core beliefs that can be summed up as what we call Covenant “affirmations”:

  • The centrality of Scripture
  • The necessity of new birth
  • We affirm a commitment to the whole mission of the church
  • The church as a fellowship of believers
  • A conscious dependence on the Holy Spirit
  • The reality of freedom in Christ

Given our beliefs and values we are compelled by the Holy Spirit to share with others the Good News of the Gospel in ‘word and deed’.
